Your house says a lot about you, from your favorite style of décor to how much you value housework and even your hobbies. Sometimes when it's time to sell your home, your house may say a little too much about you – and that could mean it's time to upgrade to get top dollar for your sale.
When people want to buy a house, they're looking for a place that reflects themselves, or one that they can see themselves living in. If your home is too focused on you and isn't a blank slate, it may be time to make some changes.
What Your Home's Exterior Says about You
The saying "you can't judge a book by its cover" may apply to books – but certainly not to houses! In fact, "curb appeal" is one of the most important things people look for when they buy a house! Bold colors on the outside, or a red door, indicate someone adventurously and not afraid to say "look at me!" while the largest home on the block may be perceived as people who are "show-offs."
To upgrade your home from this, consider toning down the door or replacing it with one that has glass panels. This indicates you're welcoming and honest. If you have the largest home on the block, there isn't much you can do to upgrade, but be sure to keep it neat and in good repair.
Another clue your home's exterior offers about your personality is the state of your garden. Plenty of flowers neatly tended beds, and carefully manicured landscaping often means that someone happy and content with their life lives here. This type of curb appeal will definitely make buyers stop! But, if you want to sell your home, you may wish to tone down landscaping that looks like it would be a full-time job to maintain.
Your Interior Color Palette and Layout
An open floor plan indicates someone who enjoys close time with family and friends, with flow from one room to the next. Closed floor plans, on the other hand, especially when the doors in the home are often closed, indicate a more closed-off, reserved family, one where individuals go their own way.
Warm colors and an open floor plan in the home bring a sense of hospitality and welcome anyone in the space, while cooler colors evoke a more peaceful sensation. Muted grays, pale blues, and cool greens mean the homeowner has a hectic life outside the house and wants to come home to a serene place to unwind and relax.
When you're ready to sell your house, upgrading your color palette is one of the most important things. Neutral colors make the home more appealing to a broader range of buyers and can be more easily painted over. If you have bold colors or an impact wall, paint over them, too, as the new owners may not have the same décor taste you do.
Looking to Upgrade Your Living Situation**?**
Don't worry if you don't have the time or budget to complete upgrades to your house before selling, you can upgrade your living situation with a little guidance. Cash buyers who can pay for the home without a traditional mortgage, will often purchase a house as-is, without upgrades, new paint, or landscaping. For a fast sale, a cash buyer may be the best choice to sell your home, and upgrade into a better living situation for yourself.
